Weymouth and Portland to host hundreds of events in 2016

Weymouth and Portland will host over 250 events in 2016 including fairs, fetes, art, sports championships, world & national sailing events, live music,  and all sorts of seasonal favorites.

The councils’ 2016 festival and event program has been launched by the council’s events team, partners and Weymouth BID.

The programme starts off this month with Dickies Quad Bike Beach Race on Saturday, February 27.

March has lots of Easter fun, with Weymouths’ pirate event, there’s live music at the Tea on the Quay at the Rendezvous and for sporting enthusiasts there’s the mass participation half marathon and a 10k running events which both start on the seafront in Weymouth.

The year marks the sixteenth year of the Best of Dorset Show, Sunday, June 5th; which is a free event in the Weymouth Pavilion which is show casing a year of adventure and fun  taking place all over Dorset.

All the areas great iconic events return in 2016 including the Wessex Folk Festival, Armed Forces Week, the Out Loud Music festival during June, Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival in July, Weymouth Carnival will be a 2 day event. There will be Waterfest then the Ironman Triathlon in September, Beach Motocross in October and Guy Fawkes Bonfire and fireworks celebrations in November.

The Weymouth Triathlon will be organised by Ironman this year, which is the world’s leading triathlon company and promises to attract more than 2,000 competitors in the full and half-distance triathlon races.

The council tourism spokesman Councillor Jason Osborne said: “This year’s programme is packed full of great events and activities offering something for everyone. The many seasonal favorites are joined by some fantastic new events, making the programme bigger and better than ever. I’d like to encourage residents to come and take full advantage of this impressive community-based events programme which continues to entertain and inspire as well as to generate many social and economic and benefits across the borough.”

Activity challenges including the BustinSkin multiple event series, a ten mile road race and Dimble Bimble Fun Run and the Round-the-Rock 10K run on Portland. There’s the Weymouth 10 Mile Race, Weldmar Midnight walk on Weymouths’ Seafront. There will be an  It’s a Knockout at Lodmoor Country Park and the ASA Long Distance Swimming Championships off Preston Beach will also take place this year.
